The Midnight Sky: Sick Earth

My last contribution to The Midnight Sky before its release. I did some initial concepts for the sick earth wide and close up view in January 2020. Later in October I did a close up study concept of the earths atmosphere which was meant to be seen from the Aether console screen, which vfx used as a temp image for their company... the shot went straight to final which was an unexpected pleasant surprise to me. I was then later asked to do some mattepaintings for some sick earth shots disguised as “can you do some POLISHED COMP-FRIENDLY concepts that may end up in the comp as a final???” 😂 while I consider my mattepainting days well and truly behind me, it was a fun nostalgia trip to do two dmp’s for the film. There’s a shot shown below showing the culmination of my designs and matte painting spanning over the course of just over a year, in one image, which includes the Aether ship I designed, the escape shuttle I designed, and the sick earth element I designed and matte painted. All in all a fun ending to my year long + journey on what turned out to be a fantastic show to work on. Definitely a career hilight. The concepts and matte paintings used a mix of 3D and 2d techniques, with a mixture of rendered vdb elements, painting, and mattepainting photobashing techniques.
